Okay so I thought that I would get on and update everyone on what is going on with sweet baby Eli. Last night Blake and I went down to hang out with him and found out that they had done another X-ray and found that he had a pneumothorax in both lungs, which is a collapsed lung. We looked at the X-rays with the doctor and saw that the pressure in his lungs was pushing his heart out of the way and so we pushed for them to put in some chest tubes. The left lung was worse then the right and so they were going to put a tube in the left and then do a nitrous washout, or something, to fix the right one.
So they put in the left one and found that the right had gotten worse and so they put a tube in the right as well. Okay so what does this all mean and how is he doing. It means that his lungs were immature and by putting him on the pressurized air his lungs collapsed and he really had to work to breathe. When we went down this morning and afternoon, they said he is doing much better. His left lung has pretty much cleared up and they hope to clamp the tube tomorrow and see of his lung stays expanded. If it does then they will take the tube out. As for the right one they will look at the X-ray and see how that one is doing. On the right the tube is higher than were the air is and so it is taking longer cause the air has to travel up to the tube.
This afternoon when we went down they had taken him out of the oxygen hood (which was for the nitrous washout) and put him on the low flow nasal cannula. And is actually requiring only about 26 percent oxygen and room air is 21 percent. So we are taking it little steps at a time. It is hard to say for sure but they think he will be in there for another week or so. We have only held him twice and now with the tubes in he is not allowed to be held. It has been a roller coaster ride for us.
Blake finished his last final yesterday, so he is finally done law school. He is packing up the moving truck tonight. We aren't sure when he is going to take off, it all depends on Eli. My mom and I will stsy for a few days after he gets out.
Okay so now that I have gone on and on. We will let you know what is going on.
